[purchase/affiliate] I’d always rather wear a jacket than a cardigan – we’re not talking dinner jacket formal but more those stretchy, move-with-you ones that feel as comfy as a cardi but don’t look quite so…er…limp. I have got a lovely long, hoodie cardi type thing and a couple for the odd occasion but once I got into jackets instead, I didn’t look back. They’re usually Uniqlo because they have truly conquered the fluid jacket that – crucially if you are short – allow you to fold up the sleeves to 3/4 length. Just add jeans and t-shirt. However, I went off piste last week while Max was staying (he works in fashion and is a bad influence on my wallet!) and bought the lightest linen-blend jacket which I can’t stop wearing!
So, mine is off-white (as above) and the other two colour options are navy and beige. It’s available in XXS – XXL. The tailoring is light and the linen blend fabric is cool. I’d choose a linen blend over full linen just because of the creasing issue – lovely as a tousled linen shirt looks, I don’t think a crumpled jacket gives quite the same nonchalance.
Here I am looking awkward in my kitchen! My kids keep complaining that I don’t tidy the background enough so the gin is in shot – and sometimes, apparently, toast! The jacket is £49.99 HERE and I’m wearing it with my beloved H&M linen shirt (last count, three…white, black and peach) which is £17.99 HERE.
The denim shirt has been given a jacket identity with side pockets – I’ve seen these in store and kicking myself for not trying on but at least I do know the fabric is very soft so it’s going to move with you. Style-wise, personally I wouldn’t do the double denim and all that leaves me with on the bottom is yoga leggings, track pants or harems. I love it but not sure I have the wardrobe for it to go with. It comes in blue (above), dark denim and white – I noticed a comment that the buttons are fiddly but I don’t think it’s something you’d be doing up all the time – it’s basically a cardigan upgrade! You can find it in XXS to XXL (commenters say it’s roomy) for £34.90 HERE. The short jacket next to the denim is in jersey and your best option with a floral dress. It sits just below the waist so you don’t look swamped and the fabric means that you have full movement – roll up the sleeves, add trainers and there you are. Again, it’s available in all sizes and it’s £34.90 HERE. It comes in off-white, beige and black and I think off-white is probably the best summer pick.
I wrote about the Uniqlo summer suit a few weeks ago – this is the jacket (last year’s version) and I wear it such a lot (please ignore the oven gloves – I feel another telling off from Lucy and Max coming on…). I mostly just wear it with my jeans and trainers but top wise, a vintage style t-shirt or stripes is good. It comes in black, navy and off white for £59.90 HERE. All the usual sizes are applicable.
I know I bang on every year about the Uniqlo bra tops but I feel vindicated by a feature in one of the broadsheets yesterday extolling the virtues of these support tops. I’m glad to see a new version with a higher neckline (top left) because I think my yoga class has seen more than they ever need to because they are a bit cleavage friendly! I so rarely wear a proper bra any more because these are my everyday wear. For summer opt for the Airism versions if you’re wearing under tops, but if not, they work on their own (yes, even with a jacket) as a strappy top. The page is HERE although I do think they will have more options later in the summer. I have a few with cross straps on the backs and they’re my favourites.
